Situated at the Northwestern tip of Washington State Cape Flattery and Neeah Harbor mark the entrance into Strait of Juan de Fuca. This maps is in excellent condition and the coloring remains bright. According to Lynn Middleton Neeah Harbor or Neah Bay has a long history of names. English Captain Kellett in 1847 named the harbor, "After the Makah Chief Dee-ah. The Clallams, on the east, had nasal language and called it Neah. In 1790, the Spanish Captains called it 'Bahia de Nunez Gaona' after Haro y Peralta, a distinguished Spanish prelate, Archbishop of Mexico in 1772, and Viceroy for a short period in 1787. American traders called it 'Poverty Cove and Wilkes called it 'Scarborough Harbor' after Captain James Scarborough of the Hudson's Bay Company who had rendered assistance to Wilkes party" (141-2). Cape Flattery was named by, "Captain Cook, 1778, because of the prspect of improvement in the weather which for days had been very stormy. On Eliza's chart, 1791. Cape Flattery is given as 'Punta de Martinez'" (81).
