Description: The 1868 U.S. Coast Survey of Port Madison, Washington Territory (Register No. 1087, scaled at 1:10,000) was conducted under Superintendent Benjamin Peirce and led by assistant hydrographer J.S. Lawson. It provides detailed early hydrographic soundings, shoreline topography, and maritime features of the Puget Sound area. The port was named after the fourth U.S. President James Madison, who was the president during the War of 1812.
