Descriptions: The 1854 U.S. Coast Survey map, titled "Reconnaissance of Port Townshend, Washington Territory," is an early federal hydrographic and topographic chart. It documents the natural features, water depths, and sparse pioneer settlement of Port Townsend Bay long before the establishment of its iconic Victorian commercial district. According to author Lynn Middleton Port Townshend was named by Captain George Vancouver on May 8, 1792 who named it,"after the noble Marquis of that name." Unfortunately for the Marquis the correct spelling of his name Townshend didn't stand the test of centuries and was rather quickly altered to Townsend by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841, which is the spelling that has persisted into the modern day.
