In 1790, the Spanish Captains called it 'Bahia de Nunez Gaona' after Haro y Peralta, a distinguished Spanish prelate, Archbishop of Mexico in 1772, and Viceroy for a short period in 1787. American traders called it 'Poverty Cove and Wilkes called it 'Scarborough Harbor' after Captain James Scarborough of the Hudson's Bay Company who had rendered assistance to Wilkes party\" (141-2). Cape Flattery was named by, \"Captain Cook, 1778, because of the prspect of improvement in the weather which for days had been very stormy. On Eliza's chart, 1791.
