Published in Paris between 1770 and 1786 by George Louis Marie Leclerc, Le Comte de Buffon. Buffon was considered one of the preeminent naturalists of his time and is known for portraying his animal subjects accurately in their natural habitat. Buffon is honored by having streets named after him in most major French cities. Appropriately the Rue Buffon in Paris is located near the French Museum of Natural History and The Jardin des Plantes. In addition to the accurate scientific depiction of his subjects, a unique aspect of Buffon's work was his ability to portray many of his subjects as exhibiting a certain "personality" or demeanor.
L’Histoire Naturelle met immense success, almost as great as Encyclopédie by Diderot, which came out in the same period.
